Time away from the daily rush
In both Danish and Norwegian hygge is a word for a mood of coziness and comfort with feelings of wellness and contentment, referring to a form of everyday togetherness. The emphasis on hygge as a core part of Danish culture is a recent phenomenon, dating to the late 20th century and has since evolved into the cultural idea known today. Hygge stems from hyggja which means “to think” in Old Norse and built from the Old Norse word hugr, which later became the hug meaning the soul, mind, and consciousness. The Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen has studied the positive effect of “hygge” on Danish society.

Story
Roman inscriptional letterforms served as the basis of Atava by type designer Delve Withrington. That foundational origin point is most evident in the classic proportions of the capital letters, the flared stroke ends, the wedge-shape terminals and exit strokes echoing the use of a chisel. Upon close inspection, subtle variations resulting from its hand-crafted nature are revealed as many shapes and elements were often purposefully re-drawn in production instead of simply being copied between glyphs or employing staid algorithmic interpolation.
At text sizes, Atava’s ample x-height and familiar proportions provide a comfortable reading experience. However, the personality of Atava is most apparent in display sizes — it evokes a sense of mystery and wonder, and its more artful nature is revealed. Some features of Atava may call to mind typefaces by Berthold Wolpe, Hermann Zapf, or Ed Benguiat. In the same construct, Atava creates its own calm center space where imagination and delight foster curiosity and encourage further exploration.
The Atava family is comprised of five upright weights plus companion italics and all with a large complement of glyphs for advanced typography and broad language support. Atava can be relied upon to perform well in both print and digital mediums. Use its lighter and heavier weights for display work including logos, headlines, product packaging, and more. •!•
