Story
“Afzoon” is a Persian word meaning “extra.” The vision for this bold, extraordinary, and adventurous design by Los Angeles–based graphic artist and designer Kourosh Beigpour was to constrain every glyph between three shared lines, creating letterforms with a more cubical and overall darker appearance. That approach, paired with tight, uniform spacing between all glyphs, creates a bold rhythm, demanding the viewer’s attention.
To preserve the internal dynamic, strategic breaks were introduced within individual glyphs throughout the design system, adding rhythm and visual interest, but without compromising on its legibility or unique character.
The boldness and unmistakable letterforms of Afzoon make it a natural fit for titles and headlines, logos, posters, book covers, album art, product packaging, editorial layouts, and more.
Afzoon supports 512 languages across 4 scripts. Coverage includes: 22 Arabic-script languages, such as Standard Arabic, Kurdish, Persian, and Urdu. The Latin set supports Pan-European, Pan-African, and Oceanic languages, plus Navajo, Polish, Icelandic, and Vietnamese. The Cyrillic script covers Ukrainian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, and more. The Greek script rounds out the repertoire with support for Modern Greek. •!•
An “Arabic Script Forward” Design

The harmonious inter-script appearance of Afzoon is due to the design of the Latin script taking its cues from the Arabic script. To achieve this parity, the Latin x-height is the same scale as the body of the Arabic while the lowercase ascenders and the cap height match the ascenders of the Arabic glyphs. Afzoon’s dense color and geometric nature also build on this effect.
Afzoon is among the 2023 Society of Typographic Arts 100 in the category of Typeface Design.
