Jeff Kellem
After a 20+ year hiatus, Jeff Kellem returned to type design as founder of Slanted Hall. In the 1980s, Jeff focused on music notation fonts, designed using Don Knuth’s Metafont, while working on music notation software research. He’s also a font engineer, system architect, musician, dancer, has consulted with Glyphs, and collaborated with Delve Withrington.
The bespoke music typeface Collins was designed by Jeff for The Sacred Harp: 2025 Edition.
Jeff has presented about type design at TypeCon, ATypI, and the Hackers Conference; on other topics at Usenix, LISA, DECUS Japan & Hong Kong. He helped organize the first USENIX Mobile Computing Symposium and a decade of the Hackers Conference.
A retrospective book and multimedia project focusing on his music concert photography is in the works to release around the 30th anniversary of the end of the block of photos and musicians intended for inclusion. Another research project is the restoration of a 1960s recording with a booklet including backstory and scores.
Jeff is a member of SOTA, ATypI, Type Directors Club, ASCAP, voting member of The Recording Academy, and 2nd Vice President of ASMAC (American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers).
